Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholar

At JPS Health Network, we are committed to community service, social justice, and equity by providing opportunities to students and future physicians underrepresented in medicine (URM). In support of these initiatives, we have established the Diversity in Medicine Visiting Student Scholar Program.

This scholarship will provide up to $2,000 in reimbursement to defray travel, housing, and living expenses for medical students visiting JPS on an elective rotation. The program is available to eligible senior medical students in underrepresented groups as defined by the AAMC in these six specific specialties:

  • Emergency Medicine
  • Family Medicine
  • Obstetrics & Gynecology
  • Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Podiatry
  • Psychiatry

Application Eligibility:
  • Incoming 4th year medical students who are enrolled in U.S. accredited medical schools and in good academic standing
  • Medical students who are underrepresented in medicine, specifically Black/African-American, Hispanic/Latino, Native American/Alaskan Native, and Pacific Islander/Native Hawaiian

Program Details:
  • The application period is open from March 1 - April 30
  • Rotations must take place in 4-week blocks from July through January each academic year
  • Students must apply in VSLO for approval for designated specialty/month
  • Accepted students may receive reimbursement funding up to $2,000 to defray living expenses
  • Students will have the opportunity to network with residency program directors, residents, faculty, and other students, and attend didactic sessions and other educational activities
