Adult Medicine & Critical Care
Many residents consider adult medicine and critical care to be one of the best experiences. This is because JPS helps our residents obtain the confidence to diagnose and care for a diverse population with a variety of diseases rarely seen outside a public hospital. Residents also care for continuity patients alongside family medicine faculty on the family medicine inpatient teams.

Advanced Procedures Track
The Advanced Rural-Global Medical and Surgical (ARMS) Track is a unique and innovative 4-year program designed to prepare "comprehensivists" capable of providing essential medical and surgical care in low-resource settings. ARMS further builds on core competencies of medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics, and rural-global training at JPS to include one-on-one surgical training e.g. hernia repair, laparoscopic surgery, plastic surgery, trauma surgery, endoscopy, etc.), expanded obstetrics competencies (e.g. c-section, dilation curettage, etc.), orthopaedic management, ultrasound training, and intensive care competencies (e.g. neonatology, pediatrics, medicine, and surgery). Beginning in their PGY-2 year, ARMS residents obtain experience at JPS, as well as in rural and/or global hospitals. Further, ARMS residents in their 4th year play an important role in resident education, program research, innovation, and leadership development. ARMS focus areas have been developed through rural and global training research, collaboration with organizations such as the World Health Organization (WHO), and years of JPS alumni rural and global experience.

Behavioral Medicine
All JPS Family Medicine residents receive training in behavioral medicine aimed at producing well-rounded, do-it-all family doctors. Interns spend time with behavioral medicine faculty in a variety of contexts including health psychology clinic, street medicine outreach, addiction treatment centers, and women’s mental health. Curriculum also includes cases and workshops focused on psychiatric diagnosis/management, communication skills, and health and behavior change as well as inpatient medical consult and liaison psychiatry experiences.

Community Medicine
This track is designed to be a 3 or 4 year program where residents will gain knowledge and competency in the principles of community and public health and also will have the opportunity to obtain a degree or certificate in a chosen area of their choosing: Public Health, Lifestyle Medicine, Obesity Medicine, or HIV Primary Care. Through the 4 year track, a learner can obtain a Master’s of Public Health. Residents will receive education in chronic disease management, social determinants of health, population health, obesity management, and care of vulnerable populations—including homeless outreach, addiction medicine and Suboxone management, and HIV primary care. Residents will also have the opportunity to work on a community project that will positively impact the community and improve patient care.

Geriatrics
All JPS residents receive robust training in geriatric medicine, including the opportunity to complete a fourth year of advanced training. Through home visits and nursing home experiences, our residents care for our elderly population in a variety of settings.

Global Medicine
Practicing medicine on a global scale comes with its own unique set of challenges and opportunities. On a given day, you might practice everything from first aid to obstetrics to emergency medicine. That's why the training you receive at JPS is designed to help you be ready for anything. Doctors looking to specialize in global medicine have the opportunity to treat refugees from around the world in our International Health Clinic. Additionally, the Global Health Area of Emphasis is available to residents seeking further training opportunities for careers in international or travel medicine. On top of the global health curriculum at JPS, residents may select international rotations with JPS faculty members in such diverse locations as Ghana, Uganda, Thailand, India, and Central and South America.

HIV
Launched in 2013, the mission of our HIV Primary Care Track is to train future physicians who have a clinical interest in HIV medicine. This program offers in depth training for new physicians committed to careers in HIV in the primary care setting for vulnerable populations. With a growing shortage of primary care providers focused on HIV - and the continuing need to improve treatment and access to care for people living with HIV - this program aims to develop the next generation of physicians specializing in HIV to serve people disproportionately impacted by the virus. This shortage of healthcare providers focused on HIV was also highlighted as a key issue in the White House's "National HIV/AIDS Strategy for the United States: Updated to 2020." Which calls for "deliberate steps to increase the capacity of systems as well as the number and diversity of available providers of clinical care and related servicesfor people living with HIV."

Training Site: Our training site is Healing Wings, a federally qualified health center serving close to 1,400 HIV patients. The main hospital and other subspecialty facilitiesare within a short walking distance of Healing wings. Healing wings is also a NCQA level III certified patient centered medical home.

Structure of Program: HIV Primary Care Track residents provide continuity care for at least twenty HIV-infected patients. They receive enhanced training in HIV medicine from Healing Wings faculty. At the conclusion of their training, residents will be qualified to sit for the HIV Specialty Certification Examination from the American Academy of HIV Medicine. So far Residents have chosen to take this certification at the completion of their first or second year with a 100% pass rate. There are 2 didactic lectures per month available to continuity residents on basic and in-depth HIV and HIV related topics.

Program Leadership: Dr. Robin McKelvey, Medical Director of Healing Wings, also provides leadership for the HIV Primary Care Track. Other faculty include Dr. Golub, Infectious Disease Chairman, Dr. Matta, Infectious Disease, Dr. Rausch JPS Family Medicine Residency, and Stephanie Thompson, ANP. All Healing Wings Practitioners are experienced HIV practitioners.

Lifestyle Medicine
JPS Family Medicine residents have the option to participate in a 24-month Lifestyle Medicine track, certified by the American College of Lifestyle Medicine (ACLM). Lifestyle factors are being increasingly recognized for their central role in the prevention and management of chronic disease. Accordingly, the next generation of primary care physicians can benefit from having advanced training in this growing sub-discipline. Upon completion of this track, residents will be eligible to sit for the ACLM board certification exam in Lifestyle Medicine

Obstetrics
One of the hallmarks of the JPS Family Medicine Residency Program is maternity care. Operative obstetrics is emphasized in the Maternal Child Health Area of Emphasis (MCH AOE). Since its inception over a decade ago, graduates have each performed over 150 Cesarean sections during their MCH rotations. Operative obstetrics is emphasized in the third year and four year maternal-child, rural and international medicine areas of emphasis. MCH residents also complete a formal obstetric, procedural, and ultrasound curriculum.

Pediatrics and Adolescents
Want to work with children? Start here. Over the years, pediatrics has become one of the strengths of our program. Our residents do rotations at both Children's Medical Center of Dallas and Cook Children's in Fort Worth - two of the top pediatric hospitals in the world. The inpatient and emergency medicine rotations are some of the most popular resident experiences.

• The pediatric hospitalist inpatient experience provides unique one-on-one resident/faculty care for a variety of general pediatric conditions
• Experience high-volume nursery care, neonatal resuscitation and pediatric outpatient care
• Residents care for the 5,000 babies born at JPS each year through experiences in our nursery, NICU, and outpatient clinics after discharge

Rural Medicine
With so many people relying on them for medical care, rural physicians have to be ready for anything. At JPS, our rural medicine training program is recognized as one of the best in the country. You'll learn to handle internal medicine, ICU, emergency medicine, procedures, orthopedics and obstetrics with complete confidence. Plus, residents routinely rotate through several small Texas communities with JPS alumni. It's this kind of real-world experience that sets JPS (and our alumni) apart.

Sports Medicine
At JPS, we introduce all our family medicine residents to sports medicine because we know this type of treatment is useful far beyond the playing field. Sports medicine training gives our residents the opportunity to examine, diagnose and treat common musculoskeletal pathology under more extreme conditions than you would generally find in a primary care facility. This means you'll learn the skills to get players back in the game, put workers back on the job and get the elderly back on their feet.

Residents receive comprehensive, hands-on training for the examination and treatment of athletes at a variety of facilities and attend lectures by sports medicine physicians. Additionally, JPS works with a variety of athletic programs and organizations in the Fort Worth area, and serves as the team physicians for TCU.

Street Medicine with Homeless Outreach
According to the most recent estimates there are 6,000 people experiencing homelessness in Tarrant County. Homeless individuals have a heavy burden of medical and psychiatric health burdens putting them at risk for increased morbidity and mortality. JPS is the main provider of healthcare for Fort Worth's homeless population both in the inpatient and outpatient settings. Health care providers need to better understand the specific issues affecting their homeless patients and JPS has opportunities for further training in psychiatry, addiction medicine, and geriatrics through their Street Medicine PGY-4 Track. Residents will work regularly at the JPS homeless outpatient Cypress Clinic and with the medical outreach Care Connection team.

Trauma and Emergency Medicine
JPS is Tarrant County’s only Level I Trauma Center and has more than 125,000 emergency department visits per year. At JPS, you’ll be exposed to countless pathologies and treat many diseases in their most advanced stages. Residents are front-line providers in advanced resuscitation, trauma management, and acute care. There are countless opportunities for procedural training, and residents are fully integrated into the multidisciplinary team. Opportunities are available for residents to complete an Advanced Acute Care track with additional experiences in Emergency/Critical Care and procedures

Underserved Populations
